El Castillo

View from the Temple of Warriors

Image description

El Castillo as seen from the stairs on the Temple of the Warriors.

The ruined eastern face of El Castillo can be seen here as well as some of the richly carved stone columns that make up the base of the Temple of the Warriors. The sides of these columns show various images of warriors in full battle dress and there is still evidence of the paint that once decorated them. It is believed these columns once supported a roof under which may have been a market of some type, or a place where worshippers waited to place offerings on the plate of the Chac Mool.
