El Castillo

The west staircase

Image description

Looking upwards on the western staircase of El Castillo just as the sun is rising.

The steepness of the stairs can be appreciated here. The curators of the city installed a long, metal chain down the center of these stairs to assist the tourists who climbed the stairs, only to get stuck at the top when they find they can't climb down without getting dizzy. In 2006, the pyramid was closed to climbing.

A mask of the rain god Chac can almost be seen over the partially visable doorway at the top of the stairs.
